The challenge

It is estimated that around 20% of global methane emissions have come from waste landfill.

The partnership

We are working with Tadweer (Abu Dhabi Waste Management Company) on a first-of-its-kind pilot to install Levidian’s LOOP technology at an Abu Dhabi-based landfill site where we will clean up landfill gas to create graphene and a hydrogen-rich blend gas that can be used to generate clean electricity on site.

The utilisation of Levidian’s LOOP technology will allow Tadweer to clean up the emissions from their sites while creating a revenue stream from the production of hydrogen and graphene that will ensure that the project pays for itself. Without this, the cost of cleaning up methane may hinder the development of projects that could start to deliver benefits, not in or by 2050, but today.

The goal

In the first instance, the 10-month pilot will see over 10,000 cubic meters of landfill gas processed through the LOOP system. This is expected to result in over four tons of stored carbon, a saving of up to 25 tonnes of CO2e emissions and the production of up to four tonnes of hydrogen over the course of the trial – enough to power 235,000 zero emission miles in a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle.

Moving forward, we see an immediate opportunity to scale up the technology on the landfill site, which would allow us to drive down the emission of over one million tonnes of CO2 each and every year. Our ambition from there is to build on this to support Tadweer’s wider operations in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. This would ultimately allow us to clean up 100 million cubic meters of methane to deliver a saving of millions of tonnes of carbon each year.

There is also an opportunity to introduce a hydrogen separator, which would allow us to produce a stream of pure hydrogen from Abu Dhabi’s waste.

The installation of Levidian’s LOOP technology is a critical part of our journey as we work towards our strategic vision for sustainable waste management. In the lead up to COP28, it’s more important now than ever for Tadweer to become a global model for a circular economy, alongside partners such as Levidian, as we create the foundations for a sustainable future.
