Levidian G3 graphene powers breakthrough data-centre cooling technology

 Levidian’s G3 graphene is at the heart of a new thermal-management technology designed to improve cooling performance in data centres.

Haydale has announced successful application testing of its patented Super-Efficient Thermal Transfer Fluid (SETTF), which uses Levidian’s G3 graphene as its base material. In testing, SETTF increased the thermal conductivity of a fully inhibited glycol coolant by about 28%, restoring its performance to that of pure water while maintaining the freeze, corrosion and fouling protection provided by glycol.

This could help address a growing challenge for data-centre operators. Glycol-based coolants are widely used for the protection they provide, but they typically reduce thermal performance. SETTF has been developed to recover that lost performance without replacing the underlying coolant.

The technology has also been successfully tested on live silicon, where it matched pure water for coolant flow, pump power and processor temperature, with no settling, fouling or thickening observed during testing.

For data-centre operators, improved heat transfer could create additional thermal headroom within existing cooling infrastructure. Depending on how a facility is operated, this could support cooler processors, reduced cooling energy and flow requirements, or greater compute capacity.

Levidian, Haydale and Liquitherm have now signed commercial agreements establishing the supply chain and route to market for SETTF. The companies intend to work together on manufacturing, marketing and distribution, with qualification and first commercial deployments forming the next stage of development.

Levidian will supply the G3 graphene used in SETTF. As demand grows, Levidian’s modular LOOP® technology also provides the potential to establish localised graphene production close to key markets, supporting future regional manufacture and supply.

The partners are now focused on qualification, higher-load system testing and first commercial deployments, with discussions already underway with data-centre operators representing approximately 200 MW of capacity.
